What a pro does

Sand is the quiet culprit behind drain calls along the Route 1 beach corridor. An outdoor shower at a Fenwick or Dewey rental sends grit down a trap all summer, and once it settles into a low spot it catches hair and soap the way a gravel bar catches driftwood. A plumber usually pulls the trap or runs a small camera before committing to a tool, since a sand-loaded line and a grease-choked kitchen branch want completely different equipment. On a septic property, which covers most of the peninsula south of Dover, the question widens: a slow fixture can be a local clog, or it can be the tank saying it's full. Store-bought drain cleaner is a poor trade either way. It rarely reaches a blockage sitting 20 feet out, and whatever does reach the tank knocks back the bacteria doing the real work down there. After the line opens, the plumber runs every fixture on that branch to confirm flow is genuinely normal instead of briefly better.

Load and sand. A house sized for one family runs ten or twelve people through it on a July changeover week, and each of them carries grit back from the beach. Outdoor showers make it worse, since that sand goes straight into a trap with almost nothing catching it on the way.
It's a bad bargain. The caustic meant to eat through a clog carries on into the tank, where it sets back the bacteria that break solids down. A system dosed a few times over a season stops processing the way it should, and that turns up later as a sluggish drainfield rather than one blocked sink.
Not on that evidence alone. A single slow fixture normally points at its own trap or the branch serving it. Attention moves out toward the tank and the field when several drains slow together, or when the lowest fixture in the house is the first one to back up.
It can, especially on a flat coastal lot where the pipe has very little fall to work with. Sand does not wash on through the way hair eventually does. It settles at the low point and stays, building until the channel left for water is narrower than the flow arriving at it.
